    We all know who in-laws are, and most of us have some of our own.

    But what 'law' is being referred to? and why? I imagine it is something to do with the 'church', since it is not a law of the land.
    It's apparently been in use since the 14th century and relates to Canon Law. If only you knew some Roman Catholics, you could ask them.

    You can try Googling the etymology section of the OED if you like. Good luck with that.

    I know it's terribly passť to look things up, instead of making things up, especially on BC.
