Capitalism won't win out in the end, because it's dependent on producing more and more stuff and we live on a finite planet. When the stuff runs out, we're fucked.

Of course I am, we live in a capitalist society. I'm just saying it's not sustainable, and that's been recognised for a couple of hundred years.

Capitalism is limited by finite resources. Capitalists therefore limit their breeding habits. Socialists fuck it all up by having as many kids as possible and expecting the capitalists to pay for them.

Capitalism was the only model for thousands of years. Socialism and overpopulation started at exactly the same time. Tell me it's just a coincidence.

People have been having large families for millennia. Victorian families were huge, and they had to be, because you could reasonably expect to lose quite a few of your kids to disease before they got old enough to look after you in their dotage. Overpopulation started when we had clean water, vaccinations and better ways of treating disease. In other words, overpopulation started when we embraced science instead of superstition, but since human nature is the same, people carried on with their biological imperative.

Ironically enough, in most countries that are far more socially liberal than they used to be - such as Ireland and Italy - the birth rate has dropped substantially. So socialism - or, at least, social democracy - with its promise of a safety net in one's old age has clearly reduced the imperative to have as many kids as possible to help you survive in old age.

The post above clearly shows the need to scrap free medical care so only people with cash, capitalists, can be assured of survival to breeding age.
The lower classes can do as the Victorians did, shag like crazy in the hope of producing kids that can work to keep them going in their retirement, something that will become a lot more important when state pensions are abolished.

People would still have to consume things under socialism as part of daily living.

Education and not capitalism tends to lower birthrates.

For example I have a degree and no children.

They would, and I'm not sure socialism is the answer. The Soviet Union wasn't very environmentally friendly.

The problem with the current model of capitalism is the throwaway society. Your TV breaks, so you throw it away and buy a new one because it's cheaper than mending it. That isn't sustainable.

I'm not sure what the situation in Indonesia is, but I would guess that people are more likely to fix their TVs than discard them. That model of capitalism - the old greengrocer and corner shop model - probably is sustainable, and I don't object to that model of it.
