Individuals do their own backups? I hope none of that data is critical to the company! Mind you, whilst things are centrally backed up where I work, our quota is way too tight. I'm supposed to not allow the area that lives under c:documents & settings<login> not to get larger than about 20MB. IE browser cache not included, but Firefox profile is, so I had to move it elsewhere.

It's a nightmare trying to stay under that limit, especially when it's difficult to control where various apps installed keep all their data files.
Oh yes, individuals do their OWN backups. We are supposed to "own" our projects. Which sounds impressive, but basically means that management have someone to blame when it goes wrong.

We're supposedly an ISO 9001 company, and recently had an audit on our backup procedures. We had 37 serious warnings, and 56 minor warnings. Our IT guy has been pressing for more resources for backups, maybe he'll get them now. I mean, it's not as if you need much to back up 500Gb, is it?

If corporate policies didn't forbid me from discussing this stuff in public, I'd make your hair curl with how appalling the IT is.

I could tell quite a few tales, too. In all honesty, I've yet to work anywhere so far where IT works like I know it should. It seems everywhere is under the dual management of BodgeIT & Scarper.

It's embarrassing isn't it? You talk about RAID to my MD, and he claims that "twice as many disks means twice as many failures". What a fucking imbecile.

Ah well, it's his fucking data. No skin off my nose when the server crashes and the last working tape backup was 3 months ago. He's the one who'll lose his job, not me.

I remember you saying that before. I'm trying to balance my pessimism with hope that as my department is still relatively new I may yet gain influence as the consultants move out and permanent staff like me gain in importance. I can but dream ...

In the end, the quality of IT is dependant on the management, not the actual people who understand it.

I'm no specialist, I haven't been active in IT for many years, but I sure as hell can identify stupidity. Even basic stuff like cycling backup media, and proving backups are ignored. And as for the network - well - let's just say that the company's idea of improving security is to cut off peoples' internet access. The fact that all and sundry can VPN in to the main server seems to have bypassed them as a security risk. Hey ho ....

I decided I didn't like the black desktops and have reverted to the "native" wallpaper for each OS for now.

A victory for content over style.
