I don't think Crowley was evil. He had a wicked sense of humour and loved to freak people out, or just wind people up. For instance, in his "complete" book on astrology (which only covered two planets, so another wind-up) he has this to say on Neptune in the 6th house:
"With regard to clothes, he will be equally a nuisance. In mild cases, this may amount merely to eccentricity, just sufficient to make the ordinary man a little doubtful of whether it is desirable to be seen in the street with him. But once more, if the mind is weak, he may have settled convictions that it is dangerous to wear wool or a hat or boots. He may thus constitute himself a public nuisance."
He managed to wind up the Daily Mail a treat (not that that was ever much of a challenge). They called him "The Wickedest Man in the World", mainly because he was bisexual and had sex parties in an Italian villa. He was also a very accomplished mountaineer.
