It's a matter of personal choice. If you like Nero that's fine but I would never recommend it to someone who just needs basic burning software, that would be a complete waste of money.
If you want basic functionality only, why use any software at all. A decent OS takes adavantage of the "Mount Rainier" functionality of modern cdrw drives, which allows you to read and write to a cd in a similar manner to the way that you read & write to a floppy disk.

For example, in my linux distro, I insert a cd and a window pops up which represents that cd. I drag and drop my files into it, and then goto the file menu and choose "write to cd". Job done.

WindowsXP offers the same sort of functionality as above, and other versions of windows probably does too with some 3rd party software.

If I have an iso I want to burn, all I do is insert a disc, right click on the iso and choose "burn to disc". Job done. Windows, probably, can be made to do the same.

I'll take a note of those 2 free options though, because when additional software is needed I like to recommend good free software over stealing or buying stuff if a decent alternative is available. Nothing running on my computer, apart from the odd game, is non-free, and none of it is stolen.

Apart from that, it does the bloody job.

Frankly, who fucking CARES if it's 32Mb? I have a 80Gb hard drive. I'm not bothered.
I agree. People have 2-3ghz cpus, many gigs of HD and 512mb of ram, and they worry about "bloat". The biggest bloat on the average windows computer ... is windows!!

The only time I worried about optimising stuff was when I had a 233mhz laptop with 96mb ram, running windows 2000, and all the apps I needed while online. 2/3 of that ram was taken by the OS & 1/3 by the applications. That was when the OS was optimised to stay use no more than 100-105mb ram, because I didn't mind it using a little virtual memory. Before that, windows liked to take pretty much all the 96mb before any programs were running.

I admit, I only use Nero because it came pre-installed on my laptop.
Beforehand I used something else, Roxio I think ... the only difference I can see is that CD's made with Roxio display track details on my car player, whereas Nero CD;s don't. Maybe I haven't set something up correctly.
Apart from that, it does the bloody job.

In actual fact Murk I preferred Roxio, but it had an add-on called Direct CD which seemed to do funny things to my machine so I tend to use Nero now.

Ah yes Direct_CD. What a pain. I remember it didn't like me opening the CD drawer manually - it all had to be done through it's control panel. I disabled it.
