Sounds like a routing problem with your ISP.....nothing you can do about temporary glitches of that sort but grin and bear it.

It wasn't to do with the internet though - it was accessing files on my computer.

Alright, alright, have it your way. Thank you Sara, thank you Dordie for your suggestions.

However, I have ascertained the real cause for the memory drain. It seems that a program hadn't closed down properly, which meant that it was still tying up the considerable amount of memory it was using up. I rectified the problem simply by re-opening the program again and closing it down properly. Simple

Well, for a start, I didn't know it was that program causing the problem with the memory, and secondly, I'd like to see you figure something out like that logically and quickly

I so could have, and you didn't do it quickly considering. I'd have just opened task manager and closed the progarmme down from there. Then booted the poota good and hard.

It didn't appear in task manager. See? You don't even understand what I did

Yeah I do it would have appeared in one of the process trees, or something. Failing that I'd have switched the poota off at the plug and pulled an annoyed face at it, and I guarantee you I'd have fixed it.

If, as you say the programme was running in the background then it would have shown that in Task Manager RP. Lady Lush was correct.

So if it did not appear in Task Manager, as you say, then it was not running - period.

Perhaps it would have been better if you had enrolled at Reg's University instead. They teach everything.
