    Why would it be 98?

It the 3rd number is the multiplication of the first 2 + X, where X starts at 1, and goes up in increments of 2,

    1, 3, 5, 7, '9'

In the completed examples the first and second number also go up by increments of 2, but in the example we're given they've only gone up by 1. That's the trick part of the problem. 9 would added to the sequence starting 10 11. The answer to that would be 119.

Calling the first number a, the second b and the solution x, then

    (a x b) + (a - 1) = x

This gives 98 and also works for all the examples.

    Yep...

    I guess you got it.

But anyone who includes that in a test paper and who marks 99 as the wrong answer........is a cünt.

It is unlikely to be in a test paper. Examiners are now required not to put in trick questions.

Having said that. Students are now taught about number sequences and to look for a formula to show the relationship so, hopefully, they would be less likely to make the same mistake as our generation.

When I was studying for my Higher Maths some 25 years ago, I always thought the older past papers were harder....

....same subject matter, but getting on the right track was more obscured.

.......newer papers, much more laid out on a silver platter, at least for any student who had done their homework.
