    Default Big earthquakes

Lombok got his by a lot last week, and they caused a lot of damage. The largest was a 6.4 at 10km deep.
A 7 hit an hour or so ago, followed by 5.4, both shallow.
No accurate damage reports yet but masses of people heading for high ground in case of tsunami.
A 13 cm one hit some minutes ago. Not high but I suspect it's going to cause a lot of damage.

At least 37 people have died after a powerful earthquake hit the Indonesian island of Lombok, officials say.

The 7 magnitude quake damaged buildings and triggered power cuts. More than 50 people were also injured.

On the neighbouring island of Bali, video footage showed people running from their homes screaming.

3 above a 5 so far. This is messy.
Bali has damage so Lombok is going to be bloody terrible.

For the unfamiliar. Earthquakes vary from something you could easily mistake for a truck going past to the ground looking like large ocean waves. The shallower it is, the worse it is.
A deep 5.4 about 60 miles away shook my whole house, so sitting on top of a shallow 7 is going to be pretty grim stuff.
The chap in Bali said his pool looked like a speedboat was doing doughnuts in it, there was some minor damage, pictures were off the wall, and some stuff fell of shelves.

This sounds absolutely horrible - nearly 100 dead so far. I assume you're at the other end of Indonesia nearer Jakarta, Fred?

There was a nasty one in July in the south England, though it turned out that it wasn't seismic activity, it was the combination of me being in Torquay and Forker being back in Brighton.

There's a better than average change they'll find more as they dig through the wrecked houses.
I'm about four hours outside Jakarta on the Java toll road.
We got one in Jakarta a few months ago - shook us around a bit but no serious damage.
The boffins are suggesting a massive one is due in this area.

I went to Aceh a week or two back, the place where the Tsunami hit Indonesia, and it must have been a massive mess. There's a 2,600 tonne ship 5km inland.
You'll find photos of it on my foo.
