    Default UK-US diplomat row

Boy, this is looking like a major crisis for UK-US relations. Sir Kim Darroch, UK ambassador to the USA, made confidential comments that Trump was "inept", saying "We don't really believe this administration is going to become substantially more normal; less dysfunctional; less unpredictable; less faction-riven; less diplomatically clumsy and inept."

He doubted if the Trump-led White House "will ever look confident", and policy on issues such as Iran was "incoherent, chaotic".

Well a lot of people suspected all this anyway, but it is the job of diplomats to speak their mind in the knowledge that their comments are for their country's government's eyes only. So the leak of these emails is a serious matter that needs to be investigated. But Trump has reacted in characteristically thin-skinned manner, "we're not big fans of that man and he has not served the UK well", kicking the player rather than the ball.

Trump has said that his administration will no longer deal with Sir Kim, making him "persona non grata", and he has been disinvited to an official dinner.

It looks like May or her successor will have to replace Sir Kim before the end of his term. What a mess.

The blame, of course, lies with whomever leaked the documents. An ambassador's job is to report candidly (but confidentially) to the government of the day about the situation as he sees it. Politics dictates that he will, of course, be a scapegoat for simply doing his job properly.

The bigger issue is that Trump has now waded into this. Under normal circumstances, a new PM could appoint whomever he or she wished as ambassador, so it wouldn't be that odd for the new PM to replace the ambassador. If they do it now, it will look like they're caving in to Trump.

That's exactly what they'll do, of course. Perhaps Trump isn't as stupid as he looks. He knows that the new PM will have to replace the ambassador after his (Trump's) comments, and that will look as though the new UK PM is dancing to America's tune. It's lesson one in teaching us our place as a new vassal state in a post-Brexit world.

Well the ambassador is due to retire this year anyway so they have a nice get out there.
Please note that any pointing out of abuse in this post is both intentional and deserved.

Anyone that feels the need to swear at me for pointing out abuse is clearly a leftie who’s been bested in an argument and who’s also insulting YOUR intelligence by pointing out the bleeding obvious as if you were too dumb to notice it.

This has been a public service announcement by Scrotnig. Have a nice abuse-free day.

Why? As I have said, a diplomat's job is to report candidly to their government about the situation as they see, on the understanding that this is kept confidential. The blame lies with the person who leaked the emails.

Actually, that sounds remarkably similar to what Chris said...

Almost word for word, in fact. Curious, that.
