    Bad Manners - Can Can
    (Single, Magnet, 1981, MAG 190)

    A Can Can
    B Armchair Disco

Only Bad Manners could have got away with this. Not only was it one of their biggest hits, it did them no harm whatsoever with their hardcore fans. I guess this sort of nonsense was expected of them. They still play it in their live set.

Bad Manners - Walking In The Sunshine
    (Single, Magnet, 1981, MAG 197)

    A Walking In The Sunshine
    B End Of The World

Another laid back happy song about not worrying about anything, no matter how bad reality may be!

Wet winter left me cold and crying,
    Beaten black and blue,
Someone said there's no harm in trying,
    Nothing else to do.

I'm just a-walking in the sunshine,
Leave your troubles all behind you,
I think I'll drink a little red wine,
I'll take you where they'll never find you.

Sad songs, well I've heard to many,
    Words that didn't rhyme,
Long years never had a penny,
    But we spend the time.

    Just a-walking in the sunshine,
Try to keep from going under,
I think I'll drink a little red wine,
Ain't no use to sit and wonder.

    As I would say?

Autumn eve and the leaves are falling,
    'till the trees are bare,
Summer's gone I can hear you calling,
    Haven't got a care.

    Just a-walking in the sunshine,
    Leave your troubles behind you,
I think I'll drink a little red wine,
I'll take you where they'll never find you.

    As I would say?

    Bad Manners - Skaville UK
(Single, Blue Beat, 1989, BBSP 001)

    A Skaville UK
    B Rocksteady Breakfast

Bad Manners height if popularity was in the early 80s, but they kept releasing records for quite a long while after. The record label here was owned by Buster himself.

The original Blue Beat was an influential reggae label around in the 1960s owned by Jamaican label Melodisc and used for their UK releases. There was a Blue Beat ska night at the Marquee in London, in 1988, Buster bought the rights to the name and logos and used it to release a selection of new ska stuff, including Bad Manners releases. This was from the LP, Return Of The Ugly.

Balaam & the Angel / Faith No More - Flexible Fiend
(Single, Kerrang!, 1989, FIEND 3, Flexi)

A Balaam & the Angel - It Goes On
B Faith No More - Sweet Emotion

This is the third in a series of 4, I have three of them, this is the second to appear in this thread. The Balaam and the Angel track isn't on YouTube, they're not a band I'm really into that much anyway. I'll write more about FNM when we get to F.

    Bananarama - Really Saying Something
    (Single, London, 1982, NANA 1)

    A Really Saying Something
B Give Us Back Our Cheap Fares

Their first single credited to them (although they had previously backed Fun Boy 3 on their It Ain't What You Do single - Fun Boy 3 returned the favour on this). I liked the early Banana stuff, it's when they got gradually more and more commercial once SAW took them over that I got bored.

    Bananarama - Shy Boy
    (Single, London, 1982, NANAPD 2)

    A Shy Boy
    B Don't Call Us

I bought this new. I don't think it's worth anything it sold loads and the picture version isn't exactly rare.

This is my favourite song of theirs, maybe because it was the first I bought.

I had one of those singles. Not that particular one, it was some Southern Boogie Band. I still had it until January, when I got rid of my entire Vinyl collection.

I need to do something with mine, atm, it's just costing me 100 quid a month in storage - it would have been cheaper in the long term to just ship it here when I moved!

Bananarama - Hot Line To Heaven
    (Single, London, 1984, NANA 8)

    A Hot Line To Heaven
    B State I'm In

This was from their second album (titled just Bananarama), they brought in Steve Jolley and Tony Swain to produce and co-write the album which resulted in a more commercial sound, which was ultimately more successful in the charts. Cruel Summer was the big hit from this album.

This is a little less known, but I kind of prefer it. Anyway, here they are on the Des O'Connor show in 1984...

    Bananarama - Venus
    (Single, London, 1986, NANA 10)

    A Venus
    B White Train

...and then SAW got involved. Actually I don't mind this, it's not AS over commercialised and over produced as some of their later stuff.

Venus was originally a hit for Shocking Blue in 1969.

Here's both versions for comparison's sake. I prefer the original.

Incidentally, the song's writer, the guitarist of Shocking Blue, said at the time that his inspiration for the track was Big 3's "Banjo Song" from 1963 (a version of American traditional track Oh Susannah). Despite the bassline and some of the riffs and even some of the vocal melodies being almost identical, Big 3 chose not to sue for plagiarism or even claim it.
