    Cast - Walkaway
    (Single, Polydor, 1996, 576 284-7, Clear vinyl individually numbered)

    B1 Fulfill
    B2 Fine Time (Acoustic)

    Cast formed in 1993, in Liverpool and had released just 4 albums by the time they split in 2002. They reformed in 2010 and financed a new album by an internet campaign. Last year they released their 6th album.

    Boring stuff done.

    Cast were hugely popular for a while, Noel Gallagher thought they were brilliant and publicly said so (describing seeing them live as like a religious experience), the music press labelled them "The Who of the 90s" and it seemed they could do no wrong. By 1993, their line-up was stable.

    Their first two singles (Finetime and Alright) both went top 20. I have Alright on CD. The next two (Sandstorm, which I also have on CD, and this one) bith went top 10. These 4 singles were all taken from their debut album.

    Cast were Britpop at its finest. Here's Walkaway live on TFI Friday.

    (Single, Polydor, 1996, 5754767, White vinyl)

    B1 Between The Eyes
    B2 For So Long

    This wasn't on any album, but was released between the 1st and 2nd. It was their highest charting single to date, getting to number 4. It's more of the same really, Cast did have a very distinctive sound. But why not? It worked.

    Walkaway is an absolute classic, and fine time for that matter... I'm sure I have one of their albums somewhere.

    This came from the episode where they all met their alter egos in a parallel universe, Holly left Red Dwarf to be replaced by Hilly, Lister got pregnant and The Cat met The Dog...

    The episode opened with this track, which we then found out was a recording on the "dream recorder". They did make a seperate video for the release, but I think the scene from the episode is better. Here's both, make your own minds up!

    I look at 1998 and think "was this single really THAT recent?", then I realise 1998 was 16 years ago and feel old...

    Catatonia released their first single in 1993, but hardly worried the top 40 until 1998's Mulder and Scully got to number 3. This was the next single after that and got to number 5. Their earlier stuff was a lot more indie and a lot less accessible. Both singles came from their third album, International Velvet, which was pretty much their breakthrough.

    Not such a big seller, this didn't even hit the top 30. It was the last release from the album. Catatonia gradually faded into obscurity after this...

    Yes, Catherine Zeta Jones did have a brief, unsuccessful musical career. She first appeared on vinyl in the 1992 prog rock epic "Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of Spartacus" (while she was still acting in Darling Buds of May), and a single released from that scraped the top 40. Spartacus was nowhere near as successful (or good to be honest) as War Of The Worlds (which I guess it was the follow up to) and largly lies forgotten...

    After that she briefly flirted with a solo career, which included this non charting single before realising acting was her future.

    To be fair, her voice is good, it's a shame the song is so weak.
