In the other thread I gave the press version of Black Britain's signing, it goes something like this.
Sometime in the mid '80s rumours started circulating about a violent racist black band in Brixton. The record companies were intrigued. Did this band really exist? Where they as bad as their reputation suggested? DO they REALLY eat white babies for breakfast? And if they do, will this help to sell records? The band were found and not only were they not racist, they were a mixed race band, and contrary to the rumours, rather than being violent, they were a bunch of nice guys with a strong anti-drugs message. 10 Records (owned by Virgin) signed them anyway. The original rumours were, apparently, spread by a mate of theirs without their knowledge.
That was the story put about in the music press at the time, however, I've since found out that the band's fairy godfather, was in fact, the Modfather himself, Paul Weller. Now I don't know if Weller started working with them before or after they got their contract, but if it was before, it would be fantastic if he was the mystery "mate" that started the rumours. I doubt it though, it's not really his style.
Anyway, on with the music, I REALLY liked Black Britain and I'm not really sure why they didn't become a lot bigger than they were. This was their debut single, and awesome it is.
