Cats and Lawns

I am very fond of cats and have a blue point Suamese myself. However, I have noticed this year in particular that he has taken to weeing on the back garden lawn, and I think other cats are joining him. There are bare patches all over the place. Any ideas how to a) encourage him to wee elsewhere, and b) how to treat the bare patches of grass (aside from re-turfing)? Thanks in hope..

My lawns are very patchy this year. I thought it was the weather.
Now I am wondering, as several cats as well as my own, lurk about the gardens.
