Some shops will do it for you - if they know you, or you have proof of who you are. There also some places that offer 'instant cash' that will do it - but will charge you. Most places don't like cheques these days because they take time to clear.

There are cheque encashment centres in most towns which, if you open an account with them, will usually cash cheques immediately for a commission of 3-6%.

Its a number of years since I did it myself, but I seem to recall they needed a couple of proofs of ID and the cheques themselves had to be from businesses, rather than private individuals.

*Cash Converters* ( premises in most towns) will cash a third party cheque for you, but not a cheque of your own. You need 3 proofs of identification....passport, driving licence and another, to prove your address and signature, ....and they charge between 20 and 40 % of the value of the cheque.

Do you know that it is a criminal offence to try to cash a cheque of your own whilst being aware that you do not have the funds to cover it?

I would not use a third party cheque cashing place, I did once, when I first opened my bank account and we transfered everything into there, for some reason the bank returned things for about four weeks saying the account didn't exist, then charged me for direct debits that couldn't be payed ( I did get the money back), anyway we had to pay the rent so cashed a wage cheque, never again, we had to pay out loads to get hold of our own money, they're a joke and they rip you off and they act like they're doing you a favour!

Yes, Cash Converters are about the best for third party cheques. Although they do charge quite a bit, it's still less than may backstreet rogue operators in the market.

They will also buy goods off you, and at one time they used to act a bit like a pawnbroker as well, though I don't know if they still do.

SCROTNIG'S LAME TO FAME: I once had a job interview (and was offered a job) with the then-owner of Cash Converters, who was also a millionaire funnily enough. I didn't take the job as the pay was crap.

Yeah, there's one on the high street by me, they don't employ normal people do they? Maybe it's company policy.

It wasn't an interview with Cash Converters, it was an interview with the then-owner, who was a millionaire, for one of his other business interests.

He wanted a driver. I didn't take it cos the pay was crap, I probably regret that now.

That explains it then, he's clearly never wanted normal people in his employ.
