Konnichi Wa to All:
Background:
For two years, I have lived in a ground floor suite of the apartment
building I manage Chelsea Place Apartments. For two years, I have been
hoping for a stray cat to come by who has lost its owner, and needed to
be adopted. I did not wish to go to a pet store and buy a cat as it costs
over $100.00, and you have to pay for the shots, getting the cat fixed,
and luxury taxes.
Many of the tenants of the apartment building I manage have cats, and
I was envious as I have loved cats since I was in grade one and came
home from school for lunch one day and found my mom in the basement
helping the pet cat we had at the time, Bootsie, having her litter of
kittens. The litter of kittens were very cute. I got back to school
about a hour late, and the teacher forgave me when I marched into
class and announced to whole class at the same time as telling the
teacher about why I was late. It was a great Tell that day. A few
days later, my mom brought by a few of the kittens for the full Show
and Tell.
The Story:
I was sitting in my place on the 16th of September 2003 when a tenant of
the apartment building knocked on my door. When I answered, she had
a female cat with her. The tenant explained that she had found this
cat wandering around in the lobby, and turned it in to me as Lost &
Found.
I immediately assumed that one of the buildings pet cats had somehow
gotten out of its apartment and was now wondering about in the
building hallways. I put up notes in the elevators, laundry, and on
my apartment door saying "Lost Cat" asking for the cats owner to come
forward to claim their cat. I also put on the notes that the cats
rightfull owner had two weeks to claim their cat or I would be
keeping it. No one came.
I then called a tenant who is a veteranarian nurse to come by and
examine the cat. She found a identification tattoo in the cats ear,
and stated that female cats usually get their tattoo at the same time
as they are spayed, so she was most likely not pregnant. I had
figured originally that she was pregnant and the original owner had
dumped it off as they did not want to deal with a litter of kittens.
I then felt terrible as I thought that I would have to give the cat
up to the rightful owner. I called a local veteranian clinic and
gave them the ear tattoo number. It was registered to a cellular
phone number of some girl X. The nurse put me on hold and called the
number. The nurse got back to me and informed me that the cell was
in shut off mode. The nurse said the their clinic would try the
number once per day for a week and if there is no answer or the owner
does not call in looking for their cat in one week, then I get to
keep the cat forever.
So for each morning for the rest of the week, I called in the
morning, and asked if the original owners had popped up. There was
nothing. Then on the Thursday that the week was up, I called in and
asked again. The nurse reported that the Original Owner had failed
to call in or answer their phone, so I could get to keep it. I then
gave the vet nurse my information and re-registered the cat. I then
took pictures of the cat, and then went off to the pub to celebrate
for the rest of the day. It is obvious to me now that the original
owner moved far away, or to another country, and did not want to have
to deal with paperwork or expenses of taking the cat with them, so
they just dumped the cat off in New Westminster and took off. These
people are irresponsible and careless. The bad karma they have
created for abandonning their cat will come back to them three fold.
I then ordered a ID collar for the cat naming her Twoshitesocks. She
is a black cat except she has a white chin and nose, and her two rear
paws are white. Since she has the same two rear white paws as the
wolf that was Kein Costner's companion in the movie "Dances With
Wolves", I named her after the wolf "Twowhitesocks".
I rigged a cat door in my patio fense, and when I let her out to
patrol the garden, I make sure she is wearing her collar. I order to
save the lives of neighborhood creatures smaller than Twowhitesocks,
I put a bell on her collar too.
Since then, Twowhitesocks has become the garden and lobby patrol cat.
She is either out in the garden patrolling for vermin, or sleeps all day in
the lobby. Since getting her, she has scored confirmed kills of three birds
(one of which she brought in alive, which I rescued and released
unharmed) and three mice (one of which was brough in alive. Since it is a
vermin, I did not let it get away). Many of the residents of the Apartment
Building I manage have totally fallen in love with her, and the children of
the building like paying attention to her. Twowhitesocks is a major glutton
for attention, so she likes everyone petting her just fine.
Anyways, I have found that this cat is a very friendly, smart, and
playful cat, and I hope to keep it for a long time.
